Train derailment kills 8 in northeastern Iran
At least eight people have lost their lives and fifteen others sustained injuries after a passenger train en route from Mashhad to Tehran derailed.
The train with 50 passengers aboard left the tracks at around 10 a.m. local time (0630 GMT) in Joghatay town — located in Iran's northeastern province of Khorasan Razavi — killing eight and injuring fifteen others, Press TV correspondent Saman Kojouri reported.
The number of casualties may rise as four of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.
Ambulances were on the scene as paramedics worked to save passengers trapped inside the wreckage of the train. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals.
Officials from Iran Railways have launched an investigation to look into the incident.
