A major car production plant, the largest of its kind in the Middle East in terms of area, was inaugurated Sunday in the city of Kashan, central Iran.

Saipa Car Manufacturing Company has launched the industrial unit at the cost of 4,000 billion rials (around $400m) during a one-year time.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad officially inaugurated the factory, IRINN news agency reported.

The project has created direct jobs for some 3,000 people and indirect jobs for about 20,000 others. The Kashan plant will have the annual production capacity of 150,000 cars.

The president announced that five car plants will soon go on stream in five provinces.

The chief executive official went on to say that “we should reach a stage in auto industry to be classified among major car exporters in the world.”

Currently Iran is the largest car producer in the Middle East. Iran Khodro Company (IKCO), the largest domestic car producer, has already opened car plants in Syria, Belarus and Venezuela.
