The President delegates some of the responsibilities and roles to two Vice-Presidents. They are Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Vice-President for Administrative and Financial Affairs.
The President and Vice-Presidents are in turn supported and assisted by a number of Administrative Directorates, Senior Offices and various bodies of capable staff.
Brief HistoryIn view of the fact that education is a major contributing factor to the well being of any society, the Emir of Qatar issued a decree in 1973 proclaiming the establishment of theCollege of Education. Fifty-seven male and ninety three female students were admitted in the first year.
In later years, rapid development in the country made it necessary for theCollege of Education to be expanded to accommodate new areas of specialization.
As a result of this, the University of Qatar was founded in 1977 with four colleges: Education, Humanities & Social Sciences, Sharia & Islamic Studies, and Science.
At present, the University consists of six colleges; the College of Engineering, the College of Business & Economics, plus the four original colleges.
In addition to the Colleges, the University has sixResearch Centers and two supporting Service Centers.
LocationThe University of Qatar is situated on the northern outskirts ofDoha, about sixteen kilometers from the city center.
It is on a prime location overlooking the coast, with the recently developed golf course and the site of the new West Bay Lagoon Housing complex on the eastern side.
In addition to the main campus, the University has an experimental farm located 65km north ofDoha.
Overview of AcademicsThe University of Qatar offers bachelor's degrees in all of its colleges. In addition, the University offers postgraduate diplomas in some selected programs.
Given the importance of graduate programs, the University recently initiated master's degrees in programs like Business Administration and Environmental Studies.
Two semesters, Fall and Spring, make up the Academic Year of the University. Fall begins in September and ends in January. Spring begins in February and ends in June. In addition, the University offers intensive summer courses.
The medium of instructions at the University are Arabic and English. Arabic is the medium in the education, arts and social sciences programs. English is the medium in the natural sciences, engineering and business programs.
All programs offered by the University are based on the credit-hour system. The total number of credits required for graduation varies from college to college but generally it ranges from 125 to 139 credit hours.

Brief IntroductionThe University of Qatar has a Central Library housed in two separate buildings, one for the women students and the other for men.
The Central Library has three branches, namely: the library of the research Centers, the Women's and the men's libraries at theCollege of Technology.
The University Libraries serve some 7000 students, 560 academic staff and 760 non-academic staff. Users from outside the University may also enjoy the library facilities by special arrangement.
The Libraries Directorate in conjunction with theComputer Center fully and successfully automated all important library functions such as acquisition, cataloguing, circulation using Minisis Software on HP3000 Server.
