Russian prime minister reaffirms Iran nuclear rights
Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has reaffirmed Iran’s right to a use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, underlining the importance of continued nuclear negotiations with Tehran.
Speaking at a plenary session of the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM9) in the Laotian capital city of Vientiane on Tuesday, Medvedev said that “Russia’s position is that any state, including Iran, has the right to develop civil nuclear programs but it is necessary to ensure international control over such activities.”
Referring to negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 group over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program, the Russian prime minister said “It is vital to continue dialogue on the Iranian nuclear problem.”
Iran and the P5+1 group -- comprising Britain, China, France, Russia and the US plus Germany -- have held several rounds of multifaceted talks mainly over Iran's nuclear energy program.
The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.
Iran argues that as a signatory to Non-Proliferation treaty and a member of International Atomic Energy Agency it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
