This research-oriented study intends to challenge the truth of paradoxical claim that the Islamic Revolution of Iran was merely the result of a trial and error process, and that the revolutionary forces began to formulate intellectual and theoretical foundations for their past political performance after the victory of the Islamic Revolution. To that end, we will review the tenets of Islamic Revolution and the major intellectual principles and theories in between the years 1953 and 1998 in Iran to decide on the following:

First, did the Islamic Revolution possess such intellectual and theoretical foundations?

Second, which intellectual body has worked on development of these intellectual foundations?

We must clarify our stance in view of the truth of Islamic Revolution. Is it possible for a mighty revolution with an unrivaled System of government to be without well-worked intellectual and theoretical foundations? In the first place, this study assumes that the Islamic Revolution possesses such intellectual foundation which is based on theoretical and philosophical contemplations that are quite unprecedented in the history of political ideology of Shia. It gave birth to a modem intellectual school that turned to be the Islamic Revolution. The author of these lines believes that this fact distinguishes Islamic Revolution from other contemporary revolutions. On this basis, the Islamic Revolution ideology is closely associated with intellectual developments. To that end, one of the major developments is sheer tendency toward the kind of thought, ideology and intellectual preparations that were needed for formation of the Islamic Revolution ideology. Such an approach toward the tenets of Constitutional Movement by the then intellectuals would prevent the practical and theoretical cul-de-sac in the movement, and the Islamic Revolution would take place at the same time with bourgeoisie democratic revolutions in Europe.

With the victory of Islamic Revolution in February 1979, thanks to the ideological role of Islam, religion was introduced to the world as a new element for power in international system. The Islamic Revolution has challenged the West with its transnational ideology. At the same time, it will be misleading to study the reasons behind Global Arrogance's growing concerns over the Islamic Revolution merely by discussing ideological challenges and the role of religion as a power element. This work tries to study the concerns of the West over the Islamic Revolution in two levels of ideological and geopolitical analyses by reviewing the intellectual foundations of this revolution; then, it intends to underline various aspects of influential role of Imam Khomeini in ideological development of Shia community in the course of the Islamic Revolution, and finally it will review the political reactions toward the Islamic Revolution in the world.

Introduction

Although the Constitutional Movement was a linking bridge between our time and the new age, it was not based on previous independent "friendly" thought and ideology. That is why it did not last long.

The Constitutional-time intellectuals had not come to the conclusion to make a revolution based on their own theories and logic. The predominant thought in Constitutional age was an imperfect imitation of other movements tended at most to raise the sentiments of the masses for some time. Since the sentiments were not based on well-worked thought, cause or insight, they faded away soon and people accepted the tyrant regime freely.

Moreover, the performance of the masses and the revolutionary mobilization of people were based on a gesture by the ulema and sources of religious imitation. People poured onto the streets at the order of ulema as a religious duty while they had no in-depth insight or understanding of the Constitutional Movement. Sticking to the concept of Islamic justice, they sought establishment of a 'justice house'. On this basis, some think the sociopolitical developments in the age of Constitutional Movement were based on a 'journalistic enlightenment' not based on a political ideology. This may explain why the Constitutional time gave birth to no political intellectual. Even the most fanatic proponents of Constitutional Movement turned their back to their traditional beliefs and tenets and imitated the Western type of ideology with journalism at the meanest level. These ideologies were the products of new Western history and civilization not based on a philosophical ideology.
