GFATM declares war on HIV at birth
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) has pledged to make sure that no child is born with HIV by 2015.
Working closely with the UN, GFATM channels more than 50 percent of its international resources on preventing mothers form passing on HIV to their children. It received its funding through donations made by various governments in order to combat HIV, TB and Malaria.
The campaign, called "Born HIV Free," seeks to raise USD 20 billion in over the next three years.
However, the organization predicts this to be an uphill battle as a result of the global financial downturn.
GFATM will mainly concentrate its efforts in Africa and other developing parts of the world, where up to 430,000 babies are born with HIV every year.
"We can win this battle against Aids if we get the funding we require," said Global Fund Executive Director Professor Michel Kazatchkine.
"This campaign is intended to encourage people to sign up in support of the Global Fund, and to show their leaders that there is strong public support to continue and increase funding for its mission," he was quoted by the BBC as saying.
