Love Hormone Helps Remember Faces

Researchers have found that the hormone responsible for bonding and maternal care might also help people recognize familiar faces.

Zurich University scientists found that oxytocin or the hormone of ‘love’ strengthens the brain’s neural networks involved in social recognition, Fars News Agency reported.

Men who received oxytocin recognized images of familiar faces more accurately, but they were unable to remember inanimate objects.

According to the study published in The Journal of Neuroscience, the hormone also helped people to not characterize unfamiliar faces as familiar.

Experts believe the hormone can also cause disorders such as autism, which impairs social interaction and communication.

Oxytocin is best known for its role in female reproduction and lactation. It also affects behaviors such as mother-child bonding, anxiety, trust and maternal behaviors.
