Lebanon chooses Sleiman as president

Sleiman

Lebanese lawmakers on Sunday elected army Chief Michel Sleiman as president.

Parliament voted in a session being attended by 200 guests including Arab and western dignitaries, following a deal hammered out Wednesday between rival Lebanese politicians.

IRI's Foreign Minister Manoochehr Mottaki arrived in Beirut Sunday on an invitation from Lebanese Parliament Speaker to attend the session.

On Wednesday, the rivals finally agreed at talks in Doha to elect Sleiman, form a national unity government in which the opposition has veto power and draft a new electoral law for a parliamentary election due next year.

Sleiman called for unity a day before the vote.

"I cannot save the country on my own," he told local media last week. "This mission requires the efforts of all. Security is not achieved by force but joint political will."
