Mehrjuii to head PIFF jury

The 12th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) announced that Iranian auteur Dariush Mehrjuii is to head the jury of the New Currents section of the festival which will be held from October 4 to 12 in Busan, Korea.

New Currents, the gala’s only competitive section, promotes emerging Asian film talents by selecting the best three new films from amongst the entries.

Consisting of knowledgeable film experts, the jury members include Nan Yu, Lee Chang-Dong, Goran Paskaljevic and Cristian Mungiu, the Romanian director who won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2007.

Born in Tehran in 1939, Dariush Mehrjuii graduated in philosophy at UCLA. His second feature film The Cow (1970) is considered to be one of the main cinematic works that signaled the emergence of the New Iranian Cinema.

He represents the generation of pioneering filmmakers of Iranian cinema. His films have already received 49 national and international awards.
