Iran says French minister’s remarks on nuclear program unrealistic

french defense minister jean-yves le drian

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Abbas Araqchi has rejected the recent remarks by French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian about Tehran’s nuclear energy program as “unrealistic”‌.

On Thursday, Le Drian said that Iran’s possible obtaining of a nuclear weapon posed a major threat to the world. "The real issue is nuclear proliferation ... it's the future risk of Iran getting a nuclear weapon," he said.

Araqchi said that such remarks were unrealistic and resulted from ignorance of Iran’s constructive role in strengthening regional peace and stability.

“The peaceful nuclear policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran are totally transparent and clear and they are under the constant surveillance of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),”‌ he said.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.

Iran refutes the allegation over its nuclear energy program and argues that as a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the IAEA, it is entitled to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

In addition, the IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities but has never found any evidence showing that Iran's civilian nuclear program has been diverted to nuclear weapons production.
