Western fleet detrimental to security of Persian Gulf states: Iran MP
An Iranian lawmaker says the presence of Western warships in the Persian Gulf is detrimental to regional security because the West aims to plunder the wealth of Muslim nations.
“Global powers have announced that by dispatching warships, they aim to establish security in the Persian Gulf, this is while Muslim countries are able to do this by expanding local and regional cooperation and they do not need their military presence [in the Persian Gulf],” Mansour Haqiqatpour said Wednesday.
The lawmaker, a member of Iran Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, added that Iran closely monitors the West’s military bases in Persian Gulf littoral states and the “slightest mistake [on their part] will cause them and their regional allies regret.”
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and the Iranian Army’s missiles can target and destroy any threatening target in the region. Therefore, if hegemonic countries do anything against the security of the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and Sea of Oman, they will definitely incur losses,” he said.
Turning to the latest missile exercise launched by the IRGC in central Iran, Haqiqatpour said the drill is sending a message to transregional powers in the Persian Gulf and Sea of Oman to avoid testing Iran's defensive capabilities because they will be given a crushing response.
On Monday, July 2, the IRGC began its latest missile exercise, named "The Great Prophet 7" in central Iran.
The drill is aimed at testing Iran's latest surface-to-surface missile achievements and will run for three days in the central Iranian province of Semnan.
The indigenous missiles, including Shahab (Meteor) 1, 2, 3, Khalij Fars (Persian Gulf), Tondar (Lightning), Fateh (Victor) and Zelzal (Quake) as well as Qiam (Uprising) were successfully fired at the mock targets during the drill.
