India says it regards Iran as a stable source of energy for its growing demands as Washington urges New Delhi to decrease oil imports from Tehran.

India's Deputy National Security Advisor Latha Reddy made the comment in a meeting with Deputy Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Baqeri in Tehran on Wednesday.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called on Indian authorities to reduce oil imports from Iran during her visit to New Delhi on Tuesday.

However, Indian External Affairs Minister Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna dismissed the call, describing Iran as "a key country for our (India’s) energy needs."

During the Wednesday meeting, Reddy and Baqeri also discussed ways to promote strategic relations. The talks came in the context of the Iran-India meetings for strategic interaction and comprehensive security and political cooperation.

Baqeri described the prospect of strategic relations between the two countries as bright.

He also touched on growing Asian demand for energy, saying Iran's enormous oil and gas capacities are the key to the stability of the global energy market.
