New sanctions on Iran illegal: Russia

new sanctions on iran illegal: russia

Russia’s foreign ministry has denounced as “unacceptable and illegal”‌ the new sanctions imposed by certain Western states on Iran’s banking system and energy sector.

"Russia sees such measures as unacceptable and against international law," AFP quoted a Russian foreign ministry statement as saying on Tuesday.

"This practice seriously complicates moves for constructive dialogue with Tehran," the statement added.

On Monday, the United States and Britain imposed new sanctions on Iran after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released its latest report on Tehran’ s nuclear program on November 8.

Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom George Osborne said that the White Hall was terminating all contact between the UK’s financial system and the entire Iranian banking system.

The Russian ministry’s statement also warned against the adverse affects of fresh anti-Iran sanctions, saying, "We believe that the constant strengthening of sanctions has long ago gone beyond the bounds of decisions on non-proliferation tasks surrounding the Iranian nuclear program.”‌

On November 8, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano released his latest report on Iran which was dismissed by Tehran for being "unbalanced, unprofessional and prepared with political motivation and under political pressure by mostly the United States.”‌

On Sunday, the Russian foreign ministry criticized the release of the latest IAEA report by the UN nuclear chief as unprofessional and premature.

“Neither this decision [to publish the report], nor the contents of the report can be regarded as professional,”‌ said the Russian ministry.

As a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the IAEA, Tehran has stood by its right to develop and acquire nuclear technology meant for peaceful purposes.

The new unilateral measures came after a failed attempt by the US and its allies to take Iran’  s case to the UN Security Council.
