After 6 hours of surgery, Iranian doctors have successfully separated six-month-old twin brothers who had been joined at the chest and abdomen.

Both Ali-Asghar and Alireza are under recovery at neonatal intensive care unit after a major operation led by Dr. Ali Bahador and his team at the Namazi hospital of Shiraz, Fars Province.

The babies also shared a liver which needed to be separated and reconstructed, but the surgical team of 15 medical experts was prepared to transplant a part of their father's liver if the vital organ would not be separated properly or would not function well in any of the twins after the procedure.

Dr. Bahador said both babies were enjoying a stable health condition and expressed hope to discharge both of them in two weeks after their final abdominal wall repair.

Ali-Asghar and Alireza were born via c-section in Hafez hospital in Shiraz but transferred to Namazi hospital for the separation procedure.

Conjoined twin is a rare phenomenon with an estimated occurrence of one in 50,000 births to one in 100,000 births. Approximately 75 percent of conjoined twins are female, and 70 percent are fused at chest or abdomen.
