iran marks ‘den of espionage’ takeover

Iranian activists mark the 32nd anniversary of takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran, dubbed the 'den of espionage,' by revolutionary students that vowed allegiance to values and principles set forth by the revered Founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, late Imam Khomeini (May his soul rest in peace).

According to Press TV on Thursday, rallies have been planned for Friday to mark the November 4, 1979 unprecedented initiative by Iranian students.

The historical event saw a group of Iranian revolutionary university students that described themselves as 'Students Following the Line of Imam [Khomeini],' taking over the embassy in the early hours of the day.

The students insisted that the compound had turned into a hub of active espionage and scheming aimed at overthrowing the nascent Islamic Republic establishment, which emerged with over 98 percent of affirmative votes in a national referendum following the victory of the Islamic revolution that overthrew a powerful US-backed dictatorial monarchy.

Imam Khomeini later hailed the student effort as 'a second revolution' that of a greater significance.

The day has also been officially recognized in Iran as the 'Student Day,' in the honor of several student protesters that were martyred on November 4, 1978, when the US-backed security forces of the deposed dictator Shah Muhammad-Reza Pahlavi opened fire on a popular student rally inside the prominent University of Tehran.
