Imam Moussa Sadr alive, in Libyan jail
A former Iranian lawmaker says influential Lebanese cleric Imam Moussa Sadr, who went missing in Libya over three decades ago, is alive and being held in Libyan prisons.
Saeed Aboutaleb, who headed an Iranian Majlis (parliament) sub-committee investigating Sadr’s situation in the seventh Majlis, said on Friday that reliable evidence showed Sadr was alive until 2008, Fars News Agency reported.
He said the fugitive Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi had been transporting Sadr from one prison to another over the past 33 years to hide the cleric’ s whereabouts.
”There is no definite government and security institution in Libya now and there is the threat that attempts might be made by both opponents and supporters of Gaddafi’s regime to kill Imam Moussa, although he has supporters within the Gaddafi regime, too,” he added.
The former lawmaker said the Iranian Foreign Ministry should work with the transitional Libyan government to secure Sadr’s release from the decades-long imprisonment.
In late August, member of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Javad Karimi Qoddousi said that Majlis planned to send a delegation to Libya to investigate the fate of Sadr.
Qoddousi said the investigation would be carried out in cooperation with the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, adding that Majlis was stepping up diplomatic efforts to clarify the fate of the kidnapped Shia cleric following the fall of Gaddafi.
Sadr, the founder of Lebanon’s Amal Movement, was a popular and highly revered Lebanese Shia cleric of Iranian descent, who was kidnapped while on an official visit to Libya on August 31, 1978.
