The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has registered Persian Gardens as a new Iranian entry on its World Heritage List.

The property includes nine gardens including Eram and Pasargadae gardens in Iran’s southern province of Fars, CHTN reported.

“Persian gardens date back to the Achaemenid era and their registration on the UNESCO list further introduces Persian history and civilization to the world,” said head of Fars provincial office of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHTO) Fereydoun Fa’ali.

“The Pasargadae garden has influenced garden designs all across the world as the first four-fold garden ever built,” he added.

According to the UNESCO World Heritage Convention website, “Persian gardens exemplify the diversity of designs that evolved and adapted to different climate conditions while retaining principles that have their roots in the times of Cyrus the Great, 6th century BCE.”

Water plays an important role for both irrigation and ornamentation in Persian gardens. They were built to symbolize the Garden of Eden and the four Zoroastrian elements of sky, earth, water and plants.

Persian gardens influenced garden design around the world and became the foundation of Islamic and later European garden traditions, an example of which can be seen in the Mughal gardens of India namely the Taj Mahal in Agra.

Persepolis, Tchogha Zanbil, Armenian Monastic Ensembles, Bam and its Cultural Landscape, Shoushtar Historical Hydraulic System and Tabriz Historic Bazaar Complex are among other Iranian sites registered on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
