Iran to install new centrifuges

head of the atomic energy organization of iran fereydoun abbasi.

Iran’s nuclear chief Fereydoun Abbasi says the Islamic Republic plans to install the first chain of a new generation of centrifuges at two nuclear sites.

“The first chain of 164 centrifuges will soon be installed at the Fordo and Natanz sites,” head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) said on Wednesday.

He also noted that Iran will transfer its 20-percent uranium enrichment activities to Fordo, near the holy city of Qom. Abbasi however said Iran will not stop 20-percent enrichment at Natanz until it makes sure the Fordo production is up to speed.

In April Abbasi announced Iran’s plans to “build four or five new reactors with a capacity of 10-20 megawatts in different provinces,” adding that to provide fuel for these reactors, Tehran needs to continue with the 20-percent enrichment.

The US and its allies accuse Iran pursuing a military nuclear program, and used this pretext to pressure the UN Security Council to impose a fourth round of sanctions against Iran.

Iran, a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the IAEA, insists on its legal right to utilize nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
