Giffoni filmfest to screen Iran animation

a scene from nazari’s shekarestan

Iranian director Babak Nazari’s Shekarestan will compete in the 2011 Giffoni International Film Festival in the southern Italian town of Giffoni Valle Piana.

Produced by Seyyed-Masoud Safavi, the animation was invited to take part in the event’s Gryphon Awards section after participating in this year’s Cannes Film Market in France, Fars news agency reported.

Nazari’s animation has been awarded in numerous festivals and events such as the Tehran International Animation Festival, Tehran International Short Film Festival and Hamedan’s Festival for Children and Young Adults.

A number of international companies from France and Taiwan have also acquired the rights to screen and distribute Shekarestan.

The animation will be dubbed into French and screened in 30 movie theaters in Paris. An Arab film company has also acquired the right to dub and distribute the work in several Arab countries.

Shekarestan tells a series of stories inspired by Iranian proverbs and Nazari has extensively researched about Persian proverbs, anecdotes and stories to create the animation.

Nazari has directed 90 episodes of Shekarestan so far.

The 41st Giffoni International Film Festival will be held from July 12 to 21.
