'Iranian army unaffected by sanctions'

The US-sponsored sanctions against Iran have proved ineffective on the Islamic Republic’s military know-how, a top Iranian army commander says.

“The sanctions have had no impact on Iran’s military technology, because our military knowledge is based on the experiences of the eight-year sacred defense (Iraqi-imposed war in 1980’s) and other wars taken place in neighboring countries,” IRNA cited Brigadier General Hussein Valivand Zamani as saying on Sunday.

He pointed to the manufacturing of Jamaran destroyer, Saeqeh (thunderbolt) fighter jet, Zolfaghar tank and Sayyad (Hunter) air defense system by Iranian experts as some examples of the Islamic Republic’s self-sufficiency in defense industry.

Before Iran’s Islamic Revolution, the country was dependant on the US military training, and the educational materials were mostly translations of Western military sciences, the Iranian commander argued.

After the Revolution, however, Iran’s military know-how became “localized” and the country’s army uses no Western military training material, he further added.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.

In January, Iran successfully test-fired mid-range, surface-to-air Hawk missile and the Iranian Defense Ministry delivered new cruise missile systems to the Navy.

The systems, designed and manufactured by Iranian experts, are capable of spotting and destroying different targets at sea.

Iran’s Navy has successfully test-fired a range of powerful missiles mounted with laser technology, which display high precision and have a range of 45 km (28 miles) to 300 km (186 miles).
