Too much video gaming ups ADHD risk

too much video gaming ups adhd risk

Spending long hours in front of the screen for channel surfing or gaming can place the child at a doubled risk of developing attention problems.

Previous studies have linked too much screen time to obesity and increased risk of aggression and asthma in children.

According to a study published in Pediatrics, spending more than two hours per day in front of the television or computer impacts the concentration skills in children, making them more prone to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) problems.

"Not every kid is going to be influenced to the same amount," said lead researcher Douglas A. Gentile, adding that a wide range of factors may influence this relation.

The type of show or video game the child is playing was reported as an important factor influencing the severity of the attention problem in children, the study found.

Scientists urged parents to limit their children’s viewing and video game time to a total of two hours per day, as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
