Three-time winner Germany has begun its 2010 World Cup campaign by a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Australia in a Group D game in Durban.

The Germans totally dominated the Socceroos, with captain Philipp Lahm and rising stars Mesut Oezil and Thomas Mueller running down Australian veterans Scott Chipperfield and Craig Moore on the right wing.

Having placed second in 2002, third in 2006, and second at Euro 2008, the Germans kicked off their 2010 appearance in a fantastic form, proving they are real title contenders.

Lukas Podolski struck in the eighth minute and Miroslav Klose headed in the second goal for Germany in the 26th minute.

Australian Tim Cahill was sent off in the 56th minute for a reckless tackle and Thomas Mueller made it 3-0 in the 68th minute.

Cacua ended a perfect night for Germany in Durban by adding a fourth in the 70th minute.

The victory, Germany’s sixth straight to start a World Cup, pushed Joachim Loew’s men atop Group D on goal difference ahead of Ghana, which beat Serbia earlier in the day.

The Socceroos are expected to experience difficulty in advancing from the group.
