Father and Son to honor Shahnameh in Morocco

Vocalist Shahram Nazeri and his son Hafez are to perform compositions based on Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh at the 16th Fez Festival of World Sacred Music running from June 4-12 in Morocco.

The performance is due to be on June 8 in which Hafez, the artistic director and setar virtuoso, will accompany his father on setar, Hossein Zahavi on daf, Pejman Haddadi on tonbak, and Sina Jahanabadi on kamancheh, the Persian Service of MNA reported on Saturday.

Nazeri attended a previous edition of the festival years ago where he received a first-place award.

Internationally renowned artists from around the world flock to Morocco’s spiritual capital for the annual Fez Festival of World Sacred Music and perform a variety of styles from Moroccan Sufi chants, Pakistani Qawwali incantations, to ancient Indian chants and Turkish whirling dervishes.

A few years ago, Nazeri took the first steps by holding a concert on Shahnameh in Paris and a second performance in the United States.

Working on the Shahnameh requires more than just knowledge. “I don’t think that it is a simple matter of singing poetry, or that any singer with a good voice and experience can do it well. Performing the Shahnameh requires in-depth knowledge of the history of ancient Iran and its myths, and then, the performer has to be well aware of the numerous upheavals Iran has been through historically. Even with all this background information, no live music for the Shahnameh exists to serve as a reference source for help,” Nazeri had earlier told the Persian Service of ISNA.

Regarding his future programs, he told MNA, “I have yet to make a decision on a concert for this year, but I am pursuing my programs on Rumi and Shahnameh and hope to find an opportunity to record these works. I am most anxious for my fellow Iranians to listen to my compositions first, and then take them on the road for performances in other countries.”
