Brazilian FM Urges Flexibility in Iran-West N. Talks

Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Luiz Nunes Amorim called on Iran and the West to show more flexibility in their talks over a long-waited nuclear fuel swap.

"We attach great importance to the agreement on the uranium swap (between Iran and the West) as the nature of the agreement is important and will build confidence between Iran and the western states," Amorim said after meeting with his Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki here in Tehran on Tuesday.

"There should be flexibility in these negotiations like any other negotiation," the minister went on saying.

Iran has offered simultaneous fuel exchange within its territory and declared that it is ready to give 3.5% enriched uranium and receive 20% enriched fuel in exchange. The country announced last week that it will agree with a nuclear fuel swap with the West provided that the exchange takes place inside its territory.

Earlier on Saturday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced that Iran is still ready to give its 3.5% enriched uranium and receive 20% enriched nuclear fuel needed for the Tehran research reactor.

The Brazilian minister also voiced his country's support for Iran's rights to access peaceful nuclear energy, and underlined that Iran's nuclear issues could be resolved through dialogue.

"We want to help find a solution to the issue," Amorim stated.

The Brazilian minister, whose country is among the non-permanent UN Security Council members at present, also dismissed any political consensus among the world states over isolating Iran.

Amorim arrived in Tehran on Monday morning to confer with Iranian officials on bilateral relations and regional and international issues.

The visit has come in preparation for an upcoming trip to Iran by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in May.
