Sohar University is the first private University in the Sultanate of Oman, established in accordance with the relevant decrees, and the academic year 2004/2005 is itsfourth year of operation.
The University offers undergraduate studies that meet international standards with quality assurance from The University of Queensland in Australia. This will reduce the need for Omani students to go abroad for Higher Education.

The University is a progressive institution with a commitment to new learning methods and technology. The courses build upon the extensive knowledge and experience of academic and professional staff, and students are assured of high quality standards in both teaching and learning processes.
Students can choose from a range of degree-level programs in Business and Management, Accounting, Computing, Information Technology, and Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. In addition, the University offers diplomas and advanced diplomas requiring two and three years respectively of academic study.

Faculties

Faculty of Applied Sciences (Computing and IT)

Studying computing involves developing the skills and attitudes required to become a member of this increasingly diverse profession. To succeed students must learn to be able to work on their own and with others in a team. Computing professionals need to understand the demands of clients and to deliver solutions which meet their needs.
Information Technology is vital to the operation of all organisations since it provides the means to support decision-making at every level. It provides the platform for strategic information systems, decision-support systems, management information systems and transaction processing systems. The successful design, implementation and exploitation of information technology is all important in ensuring the efficiency of the business process and the effectiveness of the business itself.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences offers courses covering the basic requirements in Information Technology and introducing some of the rapidly developing areas of the discipline.

PROGRAMS

The Programs offered by the Faculty of Applied Sciences are:

(a)    Bachelor of Information Technology

The The Bachelor of Information Technology is a four year degree program, offering major streams of specialised study in:

(i) Computer Science

(ii) Internet Technology

Students can only directly enter this program if they can demonstrate the necessary English language proficiency and have achieved the necessary academic standards at secondary school or in previous studies. The English language proficiency will be met by having passed UPP Level 6 in 2001/2002 or by having an IELTS 6.0 overall band score. Otherwise students may initially enrol in the Diploma, and may have an opportunity to transfer to the Advanced Diploma or Degree programs in future academic years, depending on individual performance and overall student demand for these programs.

(b)    Advanced Diploma in Information Technology

The Advanced Diploma in Information Technology comprises the first three levels of the Bachelor of Information Technology program. The first two levels have courses which are common with the Diploma in Information Technology. Students will normally enrol in the Diploma for the first two levels, and may have an opportunity to transfer to the Advanced Diploma depending on individual performance and overall student demand for the program.

The Advanced Diploma will not be offered in the 2002/2003 academic year.

(c)    Diploma in Information Technology

The Diploma in Information Technology comprises the first two levels of the Advanced Diploma. It is offered on a two-year full-time basis. Students can only directly enter this program if they can demonstrate the necessary English language proficiency and have achieved the necessary academic standards at secondary school or in previous studies. The English language proficiency will be met by having passed UPP Level 4 in 2001/2002 or by having an IELTS 4.0 overall band score.

(d)    Transition Diploma in Information Technology

The Transition Diploma in Information Technology is a two-year full-time program of which only Level 2 will be offered in the 2002/2003 academic year.

Faculty of Business

The study of Business disciplines at the University is concerned with understanding business in its changing environment by addressing problems relevant to the manager of today and the future.  The scope of business problems is immense, from planning to current operational issues.  Students will be exposed to a wide range of studies covering the main aspects of business from marketing and finance to international business.

Students who choose the business area will be able to develop the necessary analytical skills and personal qualities required for a rapidly changing business world.

The Faculty of Business offers a range of business courses across a broad spectrum of activity - encompassing the fields of accountancy, business administration, finance, management, marketing, operations management and information systems.

(a)    Bachelor of Business

The Bachelor of Business is a four year degree program, offering major streams of specialised study in:

(i)  Accountancy

(ii) Management

(iii) Marketing

Students can only directly enter this program if they can demonstrate the necessary English language proficiency and have achieved the necessary academic standards at secondary school or in previous studies.  The English language proficiency will be met by having passed UPP Level 6 in 2001/2002 or by having an IELTS 6.0 overall band score.  Otherwise students may initially enrol in the Diploma, and may have an opportunity to transfer to the Advanced Diploma or Degree programs in future academic years, depending on individual performance and overall student demand for these programs.

(b)    Advanced Diploma in Business

The Advanced Diploma in Business comprises the first three levels of the Bachelor of Information Technology program. The first two levels have courses which are common with the Diploma in Business.  Students will normally enrol in the Diploma for the first two levels, and may have an opportunity to transfer to the Advanced Diploma depending on individual performance and overall student demand for the program.  The English language proficiency will be met by having passed UPP Modules 5 or by having an IELTS 5.0 overall band score.

(c)    Diploma in Business

The Diploma in Business is offered on a two-year full-time basis.

The Diploma in Business comprises the first two levels of the Advanced Diploma.  Students can only directly enter this program if they can demonstrate the necessary English language proficiency and have achieved the necessary academic standards at secondary school or in previous studies.  The English language proficiency will be met by having passed UPP  or by having an IELTS 4.0 overall band score. 

Faculty of Engineering

The application of engineering principles is essential for the survival of all industrial economies.  All successful industrial organisations rely on the skills and expertise of engineers in the design, manufacture, quality and service of their products.  Engineers are in demand in many aspects of business due to the problem-solving skills that they have developed during their studies.  Versatility is the key to a successful career and the ability to develop skills necessary for independent learning is essential in achieving flexibility.  The strong scientific and mathematical basis of study, together with analytical and practical problem solving approaches of a professional engineer, provide a strong foundation for management in many fields of business and industry.

(b)    Advanced Diploma in Engineering

The Advanced Diploma in Engineering comprises the first three levels of the Bachelor of the Engineering program.
