The rootsoftheUniversityof Khartoum (U.of K.)gobackto 1898whenLord KitchenerproposedfoundingacollegeinmemoryofGeneral Gordon.Fundsfortheproposedcollegewereraisedbyprivatesubscription,andtheplansforthebuildingweredrawnbythe Khedive'sarchitect, Fabricus Pasha.Thenewcollege, namedthe GordonMemorialCollege,wasofficially openedin 1902,althoughitwasnotuntil 1903whenthe buildingswere completedandthefirstprimary studentswere admitted.ButtheCollegewasneverintendedtobesolelyaprimaryschool.Asecondarystratawasaddedin 1905forthepurposeoftrainingassistant engineersandland surveyors;andin 1906afouryearcourseforthetrainingofprimary school teacherswasestablished.In 1905Sir Henry Wellcome donatedafully equippedlaboratoryforbacteriologicalanalysis,thusbeganthefruitfulassociationbetween Khartoumandthe WellcomeResearch laboratories.Intheyear 1924theCollege developedintoavocationalsecondaryschool concentratingon teachingthefollowingdisciplines: Shari'a,Engineering, Teachers'Training,ClericalWork,AccountingandScience.Inthesameyear KitchenerSchoolofMedicinewasestablished.Theyear 1936 witnessedthebeginningofhighereducationintheSudanwiththeestablishmentoftheSchoolof Law.By 1940theCollege included schoolsofAgriculture,Arts,Law,Science,EngineeringandVeterinaryScience.EachSchoolwasattachedtothegovernmentdepartmentinwhichthe graduates wouldbe expectedtowork.InJanuary 1945,allthese schoolswerebroughtunderoneadministrationinaspecialrelationshipwiththeUniversityof London.TheCollegewas upgradedin 1951tobecome KhartoumUniversity College.Inthesameyear KitchenerSchoolofMedicinewasincorporatedintheUniversity College.TheUniversityofLondonwassettingthe examinationsand awardingthe degrees.Theoutstanding studentswere awardedbachelor degreesfromtheUniversityofLondonwhiletherestgottheCollege diplomas.

Objectives:
ThemajorobjectivesoftheUniversityaretoascertainnationalidentity,theadaptationofmoderntechnologyfortheserviceof Sudanesesociety,takingintoaccountthediverseissuesofhumandevelopment,trainingthe studentsindifferent specialties,and conductingscientificresearch,particularlythatwhichisrelatedtotheneedsofthesociety.

Location:TheUniversityhasfourcampusesin Khartoumarea.TheCentralCampus,which incorporatestheUniversityadministration,issituatedonthewestbankoftheBlue Nile.TheMedical SciencesCampusisatthesouthernextremityof Al-Qasr Avenue.TheNatural Resources SciencesCampusat Shambat-asuburbof Khartoum-issituatedontheeastbankoftheRiverNile.TheEducationCampusisinNorthern Omdurman.
