Cool to the Touch

cool to the touch

Lay a metal tray and a wooden cutting board next to each other on a table. Leave them in place for at least 30 minutes so that they both will have the same temperature. Use your fingers to touch them both at the same time. Does one still feel cooler that the other?

Explanation

The metal tray feels cooler than the wood. Both objects have the same temperature, and both are cooler than your skin. But your sense of hot and cold is affected by how fast heat moves out of the surface of the skin. Since metal is a better conductor of heat, the warmth of your skin flows out quickly when you touch the metal. That's why the tray feels cooler.
